TORONTO (July 25, 2023) The College of Psychologists of Ontario is pleased to announce that on July 20, 2023, the Lieutenant Governor in Council approved the regulations, under the Psychology and Applied Behaviour Analysis Act, 2021 (the “Act”), for the profession of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA). The Act will be proclaimed effective July 1, 2024, when the College will change its name to the College of Psychologists and Behaviour Analysts of Ontario. After that date, only ABA practitioners who are registered with the College will be allowed to use the title “Behaviour Analyst” in Ontario.
The regulation of Behaviour Analysts is the culmination of years of collaboration between the College of Psychologists of Ontario, the Ministry of Health, and the Ministry of Children Community and Social Services. The public will benefit from greater access to ABA services and assurance of safe, quality care when receiving services from Ontario’s Behaviour Analysts.
Preregistration for Behaviour Analysts is expected to open in Fall 2023. The College has designed a Self-Screening Tool to assist practitioners of behaviour analysis, therapy, or intervention to determine if they will need to apply to the College once preregistration opens. Other information for potential members and the public about the upcoming regulation of the profession of ABA is now posted in the ABA Portal on the College website.
The College of Psychologists of Ontario regulates Ontario’s more than 4,000 Psychologists and Psychological Associates and looks forward to welcoming Behaviour Analysts to its membership in July 2024.
